Won't load first mission

Just started this last night.

Went through the start bit, then the first cut scene, then started to load the game.

First 1/3rd flew through, second 1/3rd was slow, PS2 then just would not read the rest and sat there spinning hte disc and doing nothing.

Any ideas what the issue is?

Disc is slightly scratched - would this be an issue?

Disc sent away to be polished and new laser ordered for PS2
